Christmas

Hello all,

It is coming up to Christmas time. Which means everything will be getting busier and there will be more going on around us. Which can be great but for those of us who are Visually Impaired or Blind it can be a bit more difficult.

There are lights going up and Christmas trees being decorated, shops are filling up with more of their Christmas stock. This can all feel quite festive. I do enjoy Christmas and giving presents to people. It is nice to get together with family and friends and to have a catch up.

What can be difficult is the Visual Clutter. At home we have everything where we normally put it so it’s not something new in a new spot.

I don’t really enjoy shopping as it’s busy, so we go when it’s not a weekend day. This makes it easier as there are less crowds. Shops will often have a move around of their stock at Christmas to utilise space. But when you go in and nothing is where it was before it’s quite disorientating.

This is another reason to go when it is not busy as you can take your time and not feel rushed. Top tip for the Visually impaired and Autistic shopper, go when it’s not busy so you are not feeling rushed.

Christmas can be great from a sensory perspective, that’s why it’s important to get it right for yourself as a Visually Impaired or Autistic Person. Take the time to not feel overwhelmed and to do it at your own pace.

Once all our decorations are up I’ll try make a post with you showing what it can look like if you have Nystagmus.

I find when shops have a lot out it can be very overwhelming. I find there’s too much stuff. I get it, it’s commercialisation, but sometimes there’s just too much going on.

Enjoy your Christmas season and all the merriment it can bring. If Christmas is hard for you, then make time for yourself and do what you need to get through. It can be hard this time of year.

Thank you for reading.

Period Underwear and Autism

Hello all,

How are you?

It has been a while since my last blog on this topic so I thought I would revisit it.

A while ago I wrote a blog about period underwear and wanting to try them out. I was searching all over for recommendations and then as algorithms would have it I was pointed into the direction of Modibodi.

Modibidi are an Australian brand which emerged in 2013. They are also a B Corp. This is amazing because BCorps are companies which have been found to be doing good for the planet and for its residents.

Please check out more here.

I have been using Modibidi for a few years now and they have made a massive difference to my periods. My previous posts on Modibodi are here.

Even after using them for a good few years I am still very happy with my experience. I love how comfy they are, they don’t get bunched like pads can sometimes do. They are soft against your skin.

Three packets of cardboard packaging with the brand Modibodi. A pair green underwear, boys shorts style are underneath.
Modibodi

The best thing for me is the helpful change with routine. As you can wear a pair and not have to worry about going to change your pad during the day for fear of it leaking. If you’ve been there you know how horrible this is.

You can rinse them out at the end of everywhere and then put them to dry. Then you’re ready to wash them. This part at first feels a bit disgusting, but then let’s rember, it’s all natural. It’s only because it’s new it feels weird.

The level of comfort I felt on my period whilst wearing these instead of pads was wonderful. You can go about your day and not worry if you are near to a bathroom to change.

They come in different levels of absorbency so you can pick the one that is right for you.

As an Autsic I find all these things to be big wins.

Not having to adjust my day to consistently accommodate changing a pad.

Being able to be more comfortable.

Periods are hard enough just dealing with the pain. I often find my periods to be very heavy. I have found myself feeling exhausted, spending days in bed because I am so exhausted.

With period underwear it helps even a little bit to make a difference. It makes a big difference for me in the way of feeling a bit more confident when on my period.

I must stress, other brands are available. But Modibodi is the one for me.

And before you ask, no I am not being endorsed to write about Modibodi.

Thank you for reading.

Cheep Cheep Bath Bomb

Hello all,

I thought for this post I’d write something a little less depressing and not around benefits. Well, it will talk about the benefits of bath bombs…

A while ago I decided to treat myself to a Lush Bath Bomb. I looked to see what they had that was new and decided on one called Cheep Cheep. I believe it is part of their spring and Easter collection.

The bath bomb is small and shaped like a little chicken. You can feel the little nose and the wings at the side. It even has some little feet.

A yellow bath bomb shaped like a chicken. Being held over a running bath.

The ingredients on the Lush site are: Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Popping Candy, Tapioca Starch, Fine Sea Salt, Bergamot Oil, Lime Oil, Violet Leaf Absolute, Titanium Dioxide, Water (Aqua), Dipropylene Glycol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, *Limonene, Perfume, Colour 47005:1.

I find anything lemony is a good choice because it feels nice and refreshing. Once you have run your hot bath just drop it straight in and watch as it fizzles in the water. You can also hear it fizzing away.

The cost was only £3.50 so in comparison to other bath bombs it is one of the cheeper options.

Sometimes it is nice to just have a good soak and relax.

Have you tried any other bombs lately? If so what are your favourites?

If you would like to try this bath bomb follow the link.

Thank you for reading,
Philippa B.

No I am not being endorsed to write about this bath bomb.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Hello all,

First of all I would like to say I am a Disabled person. That is how I describe myself. My disability is a part of me and I chose how to describe myself.

If you, as a Disabled person chose to say person with a disability that is your choice.

I tend to have issues with non disabled people telling me I can’t say Disabled. ‘But you are not your Disability’ I know I am not. I never said I was. What I mean is that my disabilities make up who I am and I therefore chose to use Disabled person.

It is not for a non disabled person to tell me what terminology to use. If you have a problem with the word Disabled I suggest you really think about what it is you have a problem with.

Anyway, it’s been Disability History Month and International Day of persons with Disabilities.

We are often left out and marginalised by society, which leaves us excluded. We can be seen to be a burden or something that can be treated as an after thought. This should never be the case.

We are here. We have rights and we deserve to live life. However, we cannot live life if places do not make themselves inclusive to us.

Looking down at my feet as I'm stood in the crisp auburn autumn leaves. I have my guide cane at the side of me. I took out all the colour from my shoes and jeans. So they are black and grey. Shot on iPhone.

We need accessibility to be at the start of a conversation not just an add on. We need to feel like we are at the table having the conversation. We need to have all areas of Disability included. You cannot say you are inclusive because you have a ramp and then have doors which are not accessible. You can’t use alt text in your advertising to do a funny little joke.

Access needs are important and we need to have them in place so that we can fully participate in society and not feel excluded.

If you are wondering how you can make things more accessible then look up Disability charities like RNIB or Scope. They have a ton of resources which are available.

I hope you have a great day and thank you for reading my thoughts on Disability.

Thank you,
Phili

World Book Day 2022

Hello,

How are we all?

This week we have World Book Day coming up on the 3rd of March. Last year I did a small blog about what I had I had been listening too and I thought I would write another one about my love of reading.

Quite often you may see the discussion around are Audiobooks really reading? In my opinion, yes it is. For one reason I am Visually Impaired and without AudioBooks I would have lost the ability to do one of my favourite things. Reading.

My recent listens are:

Divergent Mind by Jenara Nerenberg

Full Circle by Michael Palin

All of the Marvels by Douglas Wolk

*other formats are available

When it comes to rereading I enjoy a variety of different books, unfortunately fiction is not something I am listen to very often.

My latest listen is ‘All of the Marvels’. This book is great because it goes into a lot of detail about the Marvel Universe and how it has grown over time, the way it has addressed issues going on in the world and how it has an infinite scope to just keep going. If you are a fan of Marvel I would definitely give this one a read.

When it comes to books I love that you can always learn something. The argument that audiobooks are not really reading is pointless in my opinion. If you are enjoying them, if you’re learning something, if they are helping get you through the day then what’s the argument, really?

Stories and books should be for everyone. Whether you’re Visually Impaired and can’t see the book, or you’re Dyslexic and you struggle to follow along. It should not matter. Books are there to be enjoyed and if you enjoy reading then enjoy it by whatever medium you see fit.

What books have you been reading lately?
Don’t forget to check out #WritingCommunity on Twitter.
Charity Shops are a great place to pick up books.

Thank you for dropping in and see you soon.

Checking in

Hello,

It’s a busy time of year again. Although with everything that is going on it should be a lot quieter this year. I am looking forward to Christmas, even though it will be different.

Most if not all the shopping is done. I just need to wrap stuff now. So today I have I been getting on with some cleaning and I will be hopefully getting on with some wrapping if I have the time. The tree was put up last week so that is all done. Mum has made her centre piece for the table which is beautiful!

I have been a bit busier the past few weeks than normal so I have been glad for today as a day off to get some cleaning done. If you’ve been following my blog for a while you’ll know I have a page on here for my fundraising. I am currently trying to raise £3000 for the British Heart Foundation and Children’s Heart Surgery Fund. So I’ve been cycling on the bike in the garage and counting my daily steps. In total aim to complete 660 miles. It has been very hard because I have a curved spine and it causes me pain on a daily basis. However, it is nice being able to do something for two charities I am very passionate about. Click here if you want to know more.

For now, I am just sitting here writing this. I knew I hadn’t written a post in a while and wanted to drop in. I hope you’re all well.

In terms of wrapping presents I am going to try get that done this evening, but being Dysrpaxic might make it more difficult. I have a very big box to wrap and its quite heavy so wish me luck.

See you soon,

Philippa B.
